Glossary / Licensing board

What is licensing board?

A licensing board is the state body that issues a trade's licence — contractors, dentists, salons, plumbers — and can discipline or revoke it.

Boards are the most underused consumer channel. They investigate on a single complaint, their findings are usually public record, and in several trades a bond or recovery fund can pay a consumer directly. Look up the licence number on your contract before filing.
