Templates / A landlord kept a deposit without an itemized accounting.
Review template: security deposit withheld
Use it when: Your state's deposit deadline has passed with no itemized statement.
The template
I rented [address/unit type] from [business] and moved out on [date], leaving the unit [describe condition]. My security deposit was $[amount]. [State] requires an itemized accounting within [number] days. It has now been [number] days and I have received [nothing / a statement with no itemization]. I have dated move-out photos and my written forwarding address sent on [date]. Renters should assume they will have to chase this deposit. — [Your name], customer since [date]
What to swap in
- The statutory window — check your state's number before posting
- [describe condition] — factual, e.g. "swept, all fixtures intact"
What gets it deleted
- Calling it theft
- Naming other tenants
- Posting the unit number if you still live in the building
The full wording rules are in how to write a review that stays up, and the terms behind them are in the glossary.
